Sunday, December 13 11:00 am Jewish and Democratic: Threats and Challenges to Israel’s Democracy with Anat Hoffman
In recent years, authoritarian regimes have been gaining strength worldwide, mostly following financial and social crises. Although our country has managed to keep its democracy intact, we must remain aware and be vocal about its violations. Attacks on the courts and especially Israel’s Supreme Court, have increased. There are also more and more attacks - from the highest government offices - against Israeli journalists, and even against the Attorney General’s office, and other safeguards of democracy. During this webinar, we will scrutinize the different threats and challenges to Israel’s democracy. One of them, the Supreme Court Override Bill, could remove all power from the Supreme Court. While the Knesset is not fully functional, this can open a Pandoras box for extremist behaviors and indoctrination. It is imperative to understand where seemly harmless actions can lead and what we can do about them.
Anat Hoffman, an Israeli born in Jerusalem, serves as the Executive Director of the Israel Religious Action Center (IRAC) since 2002.

Dear Congregants, I hope this email finds you and your family safe and well. As you know we will not be able to house the homeless this season due to the pandemic. But there is still something we can do! Chanukkah Blessing bags!!
Date and time: 11:00 AM on Saturday, Dec. 12th at Temple Shaari Emeth, outside.
Donations due to the Temple by Friday, December 4th.
Join us as we come together to spread Chanukah warmth and comfort to Monmouth County's homeless community. This will be a socially distant, outdoor event where we will assemble 250 Blessing Bags (small assortments of basic toiletries and snacks in a ziplock bag). The bags will be distributed by The Blessing Bag Brigade of NJ, a non-profit organization dedicated to showing compassion and humanitarianism towards the homeless.
We are looking for volunteers to help assemble bags as well as individuals willing to donate supplies. Our goal is to collect 250 of each item in increments of 24 or 25. Donations can be purchased privately or through the Amazon wishlist link provided by Blessing Bag Brigade (found on the sign-up genius website above). Sunday, November 22 11:00am “The Terazin Story – A Short History of Suffering and Deception” With Pavel Batel
Pavel Batel, the founder of Terezin Private Tours, graduated from the Military Academy "The West Point of the East" in Prague with a diploma in history. His work protecting politicians and Hollywood celebrities eventually brought him to the Terezin concentration camp, and thereafter he has dedicated his life to Holocaust studies and research. For the past fifteen years he has scoured archives and traveled the world to transcribe the last testimonials of survivors and preserve the legacy of their stories and wisdom. Pavel was invited on Yom Ha Shoa (Holocaust Memorial Day) to Israel, where on a live broadcast he presented forgotten Terezin and Auschwitz hero Fredy Hirsch (one of the main characters in his third novel).
Terezín, a former prison north of Prague, Czechoslovakia was converted into a transit ghetto-camp. Terezín, or Theresienstadt, as the Germans called it, was a Nazi propaganda site used for deception. It was unique in that it did not fit the definition of a concentration camp or a ghetto; it was used both as a way-station for those being sent to other camps farther east and as a place to house specific populations of Jews. Pavel will discuss the artists, children, musicians and suffering that characterized Terezin.

Each year, Temple Shaari Emeth’s College Youth Committee works diligently to keep your college-age children connected to our community. We send Judaica gifts, Temple mail, interesting articles, and more throughout the year, to remind them of their family back home.
Given this year's unique challenges that college students are dealing with, please include information in the comments section of the form about school vacation dates and extended periods at home.
Please contact Anisha Gizersky with questions or to volunteer with the committee.
A new registration is needed, even if you signed up last year. Please submit a form for each child. Thank you.
Thursday, November 12 at 8:00 p.m. Coping with COVID Melissa Rottemberg
The pandemic comes with tremendous stress and anxiety. In this session we will look at techniques that can help us to manage our emotions as we live in a time of unknown. How can breathing, boundaries and routines help us to cope? How do we manage our relationships and foster healthy ones? How do we identify unhealthy coping strategies and replace them with more constructive ones? How do we manage our negative thoughts and bring positive energy into our minds.

Elections can be challenging times for our country, and this year has been especially difficult for many. Voting makes us feel empowered, but waiting for the results, and potentially accepting a leader who was not our choice may lead to a sense of powerlessness and anxiety. In this time of rhetoric from all sides, hopefully we can all find a way to be messengers of peace and patience, knowing that the results from this election may not be clear by the end of Tuesday night.
In the early days of our country, Jews were not always granted the right to vote. It is a blessing that today we have the right to express our choices and play a part in shaping our government. I hope that you will go out and vote today if you haven't already. It is a mitzvah to vote and a Jewish obligation to play a role in participating in governance wherever we live.
To help you create a sense of intention, I offer you this prayer for voting:
As I cast my ballot I thank the Source of Life that I have a vote and voice. May my vote be counted faithfully along with all those who have voted, and may it play a part in bringing peace, justice and compassion to our country.
Grant wisdom, fairness and empathy to whomever we elect so that we may establish a good government that will bring healing and peace to our land, to Israel and to all the world.
May You give a listening heart to whomever we elect and may it be good in Your eyes to raise for us a worthy government that will bring our citizens together in mutual respect and understanding. May those who lead our country be imbued with the understanding that we are all created with Your Divine spark, worthy of being heard, worthy of being cared for.
In this very strange and uncertain time, may we find in ourselves the patience to wait, for every vote to be counted and every voice to be heard, affirming our acceptance of the democratic principals upon which the United States was founded.
Just as I have participated/Just as I will participate in the election, so may I aspire to do good works and to repair the world through what I say and what I do. We all play a part in building a future for our children. May that be a future based on cherishing and caring for all human life and this beautiful planet upon which we live.
As Rabban Shimon ben Gamliel taught, "The world stands on three things: on justice, on truth and on peace." May our nation and our elected leaders exemplify this teaching, and may our country always shine as a beacon and an example of what democracy can be.
Let us say, amen.
If you need any support or help, please know that we at the Temple are here for you and don't hesitate to reach out.

Come watch Monday Night Football with the Men’s Club at our 1st BonFire & Football gathering.
Instead of holding MNF at Fireside Grill like we’ve done the past few years, we’ve chosen to hold an outdoor event to be more “socially-distant responsible” while the weather is still decent.
Come watch Arizona take on Dallas Monday, Oct 19th. We will have a projector set up outside on the lawn for us to watch the game outside along with a bonfire for ambiance and some warmth. Kickoff is at 8:15 but the fire will be blazing by 8 pm, so bring your own folding chair or seat.
We will have beer available and individually wrapped chips and snacks, but feel free to bring your own stash of whatever suits your fancy in terms of food and drink.
The temple will be open for restroom facilities but you’ll need a mask if heading inside or when outside and near others.

Please note that the deadline to register for the election is today (October 13th), 2 days before this workshop.
