For Camp and Summer Programs

ATTENTION:  PARENTS WITH CHILDREN IN
TEMPLE SHAARI EMETH’S RELIGIOUS SCHOOL
 
Would you like to give your child the gift of amazing Jewish memories?
Do you want to create a love of Judaism that will last a lifetime?

Jewish Camp, Jewish Teen Travel or Jewish Summer Experiences are the best way to do this and Temple Shaari Emeth is ready to help you give this gift to your children!! 

Temple Shaari Emeth believes that our youth are our future, and so, we offer our Temple’s youth both merit awards and need scholarships to send children to Jewish summer programs including  NFTY in Israel,  Camp Harlam,  Six Points Academies  and  Mitzvah Corps.  Studies have proven that children who have Jewish summer experiences have stronger Jewish identities as adults, and so we give out nearly $10,000 annually to make sure that no child is denied Jewish summer camp because of finances.

• Be enrolled and attend Temple Shaari Emeth’s Religious School.
• Be registered for summer camp BEFORE you submit your Youth Scholarship Application.

• Are members in good standing of Temple Shaari Emeth at the time the summer program begins.
• Volunteer to help in the preparation and distribution of the Shalach Manot Fundraiser.

The completed Youth Scholarship Application must be received by ***January 20, 2023***.

We will notify you by the end of January 2023 when the decision for your child’s scholarship is determined. We look forward to receiving your completed Youth Scholarship Application.

If you are in need of greater assistance you might also want to look into the following scholarship opportunities:

• Many Jewish camps have their own scholarship programs. Check with them directly.
• The New Jersey Federation in the Heart of New Jersey  has a variety of scholarships.
• One Happy Camper  offers first time campers a generous stipend.

We are excited to celebrating the Chanukah Family Service tonight; but, the weather is frigid so driving might not be may not be safe.

Please use your judgement in deciding whether to join us in person, or to celebrate with us at home through the livestream. Your safety is our primary concern.

It is with great sadness that we share that Charna Phillips passed away on Monday, December 19, 2022.  Charna was the mother of Andrea Berman, the mother-in-law of Kevin Berman & the grandmother of Jordan.

It is with great sadness that we share that Lawrence Charles Schoenberger, father of Suzanne Moore, passed away on December 17, 2022. Lawrence was also the father of Nancy Schoenberger and Debbie Schoenberger, and grandfather of Liz Fackelman, Lauren Fackelman, Julia Fackelman and Justin Moore.

The funeral will be private.

If you ever volunteered to stay overnight at the Temple, to host the 15 or so homeless men that we host every overnight on every Saturday until the end of March, you know how meaningful it is.  You learn from talking to the men while having dinner with them that it's not too difficult to end up in the street.  It is a mitzvah to stay over if you are able.

There are several thing you can volunteer for in regard to the Shelter; but our biggest need right now is for overnight volunteers.  Overnight volunteers are needed for December 17 and 25th;January 1st and 8th; February 4th, 11th, 25th; and March 4th, 18th, and 25th. Please help us run the winter shelter program at TSE.   We need volunteers for a few dinners and most importantly people to stay overnight at the Temple.  If you haven’t volunteered before you might be a little apprehensive.  It’s very easy!  Here’s how it works:
You’ll arrive at the temple at 6:30pm and someone from the shelter committee will be there to greet you and show you around.
There will be volunteers there ready to serve dinner.

You may be asked to help transport a few men from St. Peter’s Church in Freehold or another volunteer may drive them and they will arrive at the Temple shortly after 6:30pm.

Volunteers will serve dinner in the Social Hall and the men will eat.  This is a great time for volunteers to connect with the men.  Many of them appreciate some company and people to talk with.  It’s always interesting to hear their stories.

There is a security guard with the men and after dinner they usually watch TV for a while.  After dinner, overnight volunteers move into the main office where you will sleep.Two self inflating air mattresses are provided and can be set up in the office.

At 6:30am, you’ll put the continental breakfast out for the men and 7am they head back to St. Peter’s in Freehold.

We can pair you with a more experienced volunteer if you would like to try that before staying on your own.

Temple Shaari Emeth participates in the Emergency Housing and Advocacy Program's winter shelter program.  You can read about the program in a previous article published in the Asbury Park Press .

It is with great sadness we share that Gizella Fischer passed away on
December 7, 2022. Gizella was the father of Zoltan Fischer, Marion Strachman and Philip Fischer. She was the mother-in-law of Helaine Fischer, grandmother of Adam, Dena, Joshua and Beth and great-grandmother of Isla, Sage and Elora. 

The funeral will be in Connecticut.  Shiva will be at the home of Philip and Helaine Fischer, 8 Pine Cluster Circle, Unit D, Manalapan on Sunday 10am-8pm with Minyan at 6pm, Monday and Tuesday 10am-8pm with minyan at 7pm.

An Opportunity for a Good Meal

Each year on Christmas Day, Temple Shaari Emeth hosts a hot lunch for anyone in the area who misses a hot meal on the holiday.  We have connected with St. Peter’s Church in Freehold to help support its feeding programs. The Church’s feeding programs include its partner Blessing Bag Brigade NJ, a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to showing compassion and humanitarianism toward those in need. Blessing Bag Brigade operates a soup kitchen at lunch on Wednesdays and Thursdays.
 
Additionally, St. Peter’s has a community supper. The church serves a sustaining, nutritious free dinner on the second and fourth Friday of each month. Different groups in the Freehold area sponsor meals throughout the year.
 
Now that Covid is past us, our volunteers are once again going to host Christmas lunch.  This year we will be able to serve it hot inside a brand-new Social Hall at St. Peter’s.  I want to thank Fred and Murry’s Delicatessen for its generous donations each year of sides and turkey. Without the generosity of our community, this mitzvah would not be possible. 
 
We are looking for volunteers to work with us to host the lunch. Other Winter Volunteer Opportunities

Coat Drive
Please donate new and lightly used coats to our coat drive. Coats will be distributed to the Lion of Judah Church in Trenton, St. Augustine Episcopal Church in Asbury Park and on the Midnight Run trip with YOSHE Seniors. Coats will be collected throughout December.

Overnight Winter Shelter (Saturdays, December through March)
Each year TSE participates in an interfaith effort to provide shelter to men in our community. TSE hosts the program Saturdaynights. We need volunteers to provide breakfast, dinner, transportation and to stay overnight at the Temple. Please check the Temple website for details, shaariemeth.org/shelter

Christmas Eve Dinner and Baking at TSE

An United States flag that was on Temple Rodeph Torah's bima will be dedicated for Temple Shaari Emeth at tonight's Shabbat service.  The flag was flown in Bagram, Afghanistan. Rabbi Heather Borshof  presented it to TRT at Hanukkah, 2014. She was a Captain at that time and her rank is now Major. 

The U.S. flag currently on the TSE bima was not dedicated by or for any special purpose.
