As the daughter of survivors, Naomi Miller wants to pay tribute to those who perished in the Holocaust and those who survived and mourn the losses of their loved ones. Her program, "You Are The Future" includes traditional and original songs as well as portrayals of several characters: her parents, Otto Frank, Inge Auerbacher (child survivor) and Katrina a non-Jew who sheltered Jewish children from the Nazis. It is a program of hope!!!!!

Monday, April 20 7:30 Yom HaShoah Service - Featuring Holocaust Survivor Judith Meisels (password: shalom18)
Judith Meisels was born in Budapest, Hungary on July 23, 1938. Judith was an only child until her younger brother was born after the war. As a very young child during the war, she was in hiding, by herself and with her parents and was on the run with her parents. Judith and her parents were caught and miraculously escaped death numerous times. Judith was liberated in the spring of 1945, by the Russian Army. After the war, she and her family stayed in Budapest, Hungary. Her parents survived, but most of her family was murdered. Her father died in 1955 when Judith was 16 ½, and her brother was 8.
She continued her schooling in Budapest until after the Hungarian revolution was crushed by the Russians in the fall of 1956. Judith was 18 and a student studying to be a concert pianist at the renowned Franz Liszt Academy of Budapest at this time. Due to the political upheaval and rumors of neo-Nazi resurgence in Austria and Germany she escaped the Hungarian Communist regime with her 10 year old brother. They reunited with her mother and her uncle’s family in Vienna, Austria.
They then moved to the United States at the end of December, 1956. She continued her college education majoring in liberal arts and music, while she also worked to earn an income. She married her husband, a scientist and mechanical engineer, in May 1964, and has two children. Her son is one of the top computer systems architects for the US Military and her daughter is an international corporate attorney now working on starting her own Internet entrepreneurship. Judith transmits her love for music to her students in her successful piano studio in the Deal- Ocean Township area.

We are sad to share that Lewis Kirsch, husband of Mildred and father of James, Benjamin and Daniel passed away on April 15, 2020. There will be a private funeral at Old Montefiore Cemetery in Queens on April 17th.
I hope you and your families are safe and well. As you know due to the pandemic (Coronavirus/Covid 19) there still is a shelter at home order in place that will continue, at a minimum, until May.
In light of the NJ State of Emergency physical distancing requirements, it does not seem feasible to have the congregation meeting with the congregation coming together in the Social Hall, as has been our practice for many years. Therefore I have asked the Board of Trustees to change the date of our annual congregation meeting from April 26th to May 3rd in order to put the following procedures in place only for the 2020 year. The procedures are as follows:
Date
Explanation
April 19, 2020 - April 24, 2020
Nominations from the floor. An email will be sent to members of our congregation in order to solicit any nominations from the floor. This solicitation will remain open for five days. The nomination period from the floor will end on April 24th 2020. Any nominations from the floor will require a biography of the nominee. Anyone nominated from the floor will be seconded by our Secretary.
April 26, 2020
Entire Slate and Budget sent via email. The entire slate and budget will be emailed to congregation members for electronic voting. The email will have a link that will lead our congregants to a form where they can vote on each board seat as well as yes or no on the budget. In circumstances where congregants do not have access to a computer, paper forms will be available for the congregant. Voting will remain open until May 10th.
May 3, 2020
Congregation Meeting. The Congregation meeting will be held via Zoom. Congregants will be urged to send questions in advance of the congregation meeting; however, during the meeting additional questions can be addressed via group chat on Zoom.
May 10, 2020
Voting Period Ends. Votes for the slate and the budget will be counted.
May 13, 2020
Results. Results of the election, including the vote on the budget, will be released via email and on the TSE Website.
Typically, this is a change that would require an amendment to the constitution with a vote by the congregation; however, under these extraordinary circumstances, the Board of Trustees has approved this change in the interest of maintaining the health and safety of the congregation.
Please follow the health department directives as we hope this will minimize the spread of this virus.
Please stay positive and strong! Soon we will all be together again!

We would like to share some information with you on the status of the Temple and programs during this difficult time. Despite our physical distance, which is necessary now so that we can all do our best to stay healthy, we are all working hard to stay connected to all of our members and families. The clergy, senior staff, and the entire Board of Trustees appreciates your continued patience, support, and flexibility during this challenging time.
Although we are dealing with many unknowns at this point, we remain committed to providing a meaningful and warm learning and spiritual experience. The entire community, including our clergy, senior staff, and Religious School and ELC teachers, are quickly learning new technologies and working to keep the Temple relevant as we continue to work together to maintain a full calendar of programming for the community. Consistent with the values that support all programs at Temple Shaari Emeth, it is our intention to continue paying staff, including our amazing teachers, maintenance, and support staff. Although this is a difficult commitment to make, we simply think that it is the right thing to do. While the building is not open to the public, we are continuing maintenance so that the building is ready for us when we are all able to return to it.
We understand that the pandemic and the associated economic crisis create a significant amount of uncertainty for all of us, and that many are personally experiencing significant economic difficulties. With this in mind, we are asking that, to the degree possible, you continue to contribute Temple dues and possibly consider making an additional contribution if you are able. By working together, we can continue to be here for all of our members.
Our best thoughts are with you for your family’s health and welfare during this time. If the Temple or clergy can be of any help or support in any way, please let us know. We are here for you.
Warm regards,
Fabian Burstyn, Temple President Rabbi Melinda Panken Cantor Wally Schachet-Briskin Stuart Brown, Executive Director Melissa Pescatore, Religious School Director Sheryn Cohen, Early Learning Center Director
