Looking for ways to get involved with Temple Shaari Emeth’s Social Justice Initiative? Join us to help combat voter suppression without leaving the comfort of your home. We will be partnering with the RAC (Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism) to send postcards to low-propensity voters and people who may have unknowingly been purged from voter registration lists. We expect to distribute supplies and schedule a Zoom postcard writing party at the beginning of August.
Together we will write cards to remind eligible voters of Color to check their registration status, to register to vote, and or to pledge to vote. Data shows that postcard-writing campaigns increase voter turnout and help ensure that voters who have been removed from registration rolls without their knowledge can reclaim their right to vote. Research has shown that those who pledge to vote are 5 times more likely to vote.
a. Select that you are a member of a URJ Congregation b. In the drop down menu type Temple Shaari Emeth (Manalapan, NJ)
2. You will be invited to contribute $18 to offset the cost of postcard supplies and shipping. This is an optional donation.
3. You will receive a confirmation email. If after checking your spam filter, you do not have a confirmation, you should try again.
4. Please submit your request by July 27. After that date, TSE will receive a box of postcard-writing supplies. You will be asked to provide your own markers and white out. The number of supplies we receive will be based on the number of individuals in our area who have completed the form by July 27, 2020.
5. We will have packets with everything you need to write: postcards, addresses, printed labels, and instructions. We will make arrangements for contactless drop off/pickup at the temple.
6. Feel free to ask friends to participate in our campaign. This program is open to non-temple members.

Dear friends: As we come to the end of June, we conclude with a very special celebration of Gay Pride month as we welcome Rabbi Micah Buck-Yael to share words of Torah with us at our
PRIDE SHABBAT on FRIDAY, JUNE 26th, 2020 at 7:30 streamed on the Temple Website and Facebook.
Rabbi Micah Buck-Yael is the Director of Education and Training at Keshet, a non-profit organization that works for the full equality of all LGBTQ Jews and their families in Jewish life. Before Keshet, Micah was Coordinator of Community Chaplaincy with the Jewish Family & Children’s Service of St. Louis, providing personalized support, connection, and meaningful programming for individuals throughout the St. Louis community. His work took him to hospitals, nursing care facilities, private residences, and many unexpected places!
Micah has his BA in Jewish, Islamic, and Near Eastern Studies from Washington University in St. Louis, and his MA in Talmud and Rabbinic Literature and Rabbinic Ordination from The Jewish Theological Seminary. Throughout his career, Micah has advocated and educated for LGBTQ justice, leading trainings and consultations within his local community and the broader Jewish community nationwide. Micah will share words of Torah with us and our service will include special liturgy and songs to celebrate the LGBTQ community.
Shaari Emeth has always been a welcoming and inclusive community, one that believes that all people are created in the image of God. If you would like to share that sense of inclusiveness with others, consider printing a sign to place on your door for Pride Shabbat.
If you do post a sign, take a picture of you and the sign, and share it on Facebook or other social media platforms and don’t forget to tag Temple Shaari Emeth when you post.

As we enter our 11th week at home, we are acutely aware of what it means to count time. We just finished counting the weeks from Pesach to Shavuot, and last week arrived spiritually to stand at Mount Sinai, to once again accept the basic human laws found in the Ten Commandments, laws which lay the foundation for the protection of human life and dignity.
Last week, our sense of time shifted, and we moved from focusing on the passing of weeks, to the passing of minutes. Over and over we witnessed the 8 minutes and 46 seconds that killed George Floyd as he was pinned under the knee of a police officer who held him down, even after he became unresponsive. These 8 minutes and 46 seconds killed George Floyd (z”l) and threw our nation into turmoil as protestors took to the streets demanding safety and equality for Black people throughout our country.
It would be easy to discount these protests, shake our heads, and cluck our tongues at the destruction we see, but that will only serve to distract us. Looting and destruction are wrong, but we must not allow it to divert us from the work that needs to be done, and the injustice that needs to be fixed. Now is the time to watch and listen with openness and curiosity, not judgment. This is a time to try to really hear what it is like to be Black in America, and what it means to be afraid when you drive to work, or go for a run, or fall asleep at night in your bed.
There is a lot of pain in our community and we want to come together to create a safe space to share our thoughts and feelings, and to find ways to become allies for those who seek justice and equality. We will be offering a few opportunities to gather on Zoom:
Community in Conversation: Living in a Broken World on Thursday, June 4th at 7:00 p.m.

Oluo guides readers of all races through subjects ranging from intersectionality and affirmative action to "model minorities" in an attempt to make the seemingly impossible possible: honest conversations about race and racism, and how they infect almost every aspect of American life. "Oluo gives us--both white people and people of color--that language to engage in clear, constructive, and confident dialogue with each other about how to deal with racial prejudices and biases."--National Book Review

We will be discussing community action and what we can do to support our Black neighbors and become their allies in word and action. If you would like to participate in this effort please e-mail Rabbipanken@cs.com and we will arrange a meeting to determine next steps.
In this time of brokenness, we cannot become overwhelmed. There is work that needs to be done, justice to pursue, and we must do it together. We can pray for healing, but our prayers will only make a difference if they lead us to act for healing.
As always, if you are struggling or need support, please let us know. We are here to help.
May our eyes be open to seeing, may our ears be open to hearing, and may our legs carry us forward in the pursuit of justice.
