As we approach the High Holidays and the end of another chapter in our Book of Life, let’s reflect on the past year.
The year 5781 was filled with potential, hope and anxiety as we adapted to life in a world fighting a pandemic. We had our individual moments of joy and sadness and despite our social distancing, we were able to share these moments with our community. We learned that we are stronger when we face life, its simchas and its challenges together. The familiar theme of our people coming together, often against difficult odds, to overcome the challenges we face is not new. It is at the heart of our story.
In the past year we found innovative ways to celebrate Shabbat and to observe the High Holidays. We continued to celebrate the coming of age of our B’nai Mitzvah. We joined our Confirmands as they led a moving and meaningful service. We continued to celebrate the births and marriages of our congregants and their families, and comforted our bereaved loved ones as well. Through our commitment to repairing the world, we fed the hungry in our community and helped the homeless. We mobilized our volunteers to keep in touch with everyone isolated at home and to assist one another getting those difficult and coveted vaccine appointments when they were first available. We continued to educate our students in our ELC and Religious Schools, we offered outstanding Adult Education programs and created opportunities for our youth groups to remain connected. It wasn’t easy and we did have some bumps in the Zoom world, but through the tireless efforts of our clergy, staff and volunteers, we adapted, persevered and overcame the obstacles. Throughout this most difficult year we continued to contribute funds over and above our annual dues commitments.
During this truly unprecedented year a wonderful thing happened…the Reform Jewish community of Western Monmouth County became stronger and more focused with the integration of Temple Shaari Emeth and Temple Rodeph Torah. Together we are stronger. Together we will improve the world with our united and unified commitment to Torah, to justice, to Tikkun Olam and to pursuing a world of peace. And together, as a unified community, not only will we continue our customs and traditions, but we will write a new future together as we maintain and strengthen the Jewish community for generations of Jews to come.
As the new year of 5782 approaches, once again we recognize that there is still uncertainty, but there is tremendous potential and hope that we are emerging from the trials and tribulations we have faced. We continue to adapt and to navigate in an uncertain world, but now and for the unlimited future we are going to do this together and stronger!
The arrival of the High Holidays also marks the beginning of our annual Community Appeal, this year together as one united congregation. Although we are all asked to pay dues, they don’t cover the costs of all that our unified Temple provides for our community. This year our goal is to raise $150,000 so that we can continue to bring our community together in prayer, in learning and in making the world a better place. Each donation lays the foundation upon which we maintain the present and build for the future of our Jewish community.
Whether it’s donuts, s’mores or ice cream at an outdoor service; hearing beautiful voices and music at a service or ceremony; religious school and youth programming; a strong social action and Tikkun Olam effort; educational opportunities with Torah study and Lifelong Learning or the many activities offered by Renaissance, Sisterhood or Men’s Club; there is just so much going on and so much more to do!
As we launch our 5782 Community Appeal this year, consider being a part of something bigger than yourself by helping to sustain and to continue to build our vibrant Jewish community. Every single contribution makes a difference. Together we can reach 100% participation this year! Remember, we are not just supporting a “Temple”, we are supporting our “Community”.
The Religious School is sponsoring a sale of Lulav and Etrog Sets for Sukkot! Each set is only $40 and must be pre-ordered and pre-paid. Each day during Sukkot, the lulav and etrog are waved in a special pattern in the sukkah to fulfill the mitzvah. This is a great opportunity to have your own ceremonial lulav (palm frond, myrtle bough, and willow branch) and etrog (citron), while supporting the Religious School and Temple Shaari Emeth.

Dear Friends, The Hebrew month of Elul begins tonight, the evening of Sunday, August 8th, at sundown, and with it comes the opportunity to prepare and set our intention for the arrival of the Holy Days. The Maharal of Prague taught that "All the month of Elul, before eating and sleeping, a person should look into their soul and search their deeds," in order to repair the wrongs they have done. Elul brings the opportunity to begin that work with reflection and intention.
We highly recommend that you try the App. It is available at the Apple Store and on Google Play. It comes with tools to enrich the experience. Each day presents a phrase from Psalm 27, a reflection for focus, and an opportunity to write and sit quietly. The app includes all the essentials: spoken versions of the psalm, daily reminders, writing prompts, and a meditation timer. Accompanied by photographs and musical settings of the text by contemporary musicians and cantors, the Psalm 27 app will inspire and empower you to experience the High Holy Day season with intention and an open heart.
Each week we will work on our preparation as individuals and for those who choose we will also have the opportunity to gather with others for reflection on Zoom once a week on Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. -11:00 a.m. We will meet on August 15, 22, 29 and September 5. Each week members of the Temple Shaari Emeth and Temple Shalom Clergy will lead the discussion. Rabbi Melinda Panken, Cantor Wally Shachet Briskin, Rabbi Larry Malinger and Cantor Sarah Zemel will lead an informal reflection on what you found challenging or inspiring from your preparation that week. You may join us for however many sessions you would like.
Each year, Temple Shaari Emeth’s College Youth Committee works diligently to keep your college-age children connected to our community. We send Judaica gifts, Temple mail, interesting articles, and more throughout the year, to remind them of their family back home.
Please update information you previously submitted. Given the unique challenges that college students are dealing with during the pandemic, please include in the comments section of the form any information about school vacation dates and extended periods at home that would help the Youth Committee with their mailings
Please contact Jenine Tankoos with questions or to volunteer with the committee.
A new registration is needed, even if you signed up last year. Please submit a form for each child. Thank you.
We are so excited to join together to become one stronger and more vibrant Sisterhood. Please join today as we move forward with integrating our Sisterhoods and soon our Synagogues.

Our Season’s Calendar of Events is filled with wonderful shows, great food, lasting friendships, and just plain fun. Check out our page on the Temple Website. We will also be also sending emails to Renaissance Members for our upcoming events, and mailing our flyers to Renaissance Members who do not have an email address.
We are looking forward to meeting you and sharing good times together!
We have received alerts both locally and nationally which involved synagogue email accounts being spoofed so it appears that the recipient received an email from a synagogue email address, when in reality it is sent from a fake address.
While most of us have come across this type of scam, in these particular cases, emails that initially appear to be from synagogue addresses were used and the recipients were asked for gift cards or a bank transfer.
What you can do: Please look at the email address of the email. All Temple emails come from an email ending only in @shaariemeth.org. Emails from addresses such as shaariemeth@gmail.com, rabbi.Panken@aol.com, for example, are not legitimate email addresses. Please do not forward these emails to avoid spreading a virus. Do not click on any links in suspicious emails. The best thing to do is to permanently delete these emails.
Please note that as a general rule the goal of these culprits is to get people to disclose personal information by making it appear that an email is from somebody you are likely to trust. Please become familiar with this advice from the Federal Trade Commission on How to Recognize and Avoid Phishing Scams.
