Lifelong Learning: Julie Fisher - Kuchinate: African Refugee Women’s Collective:
Sunday, May 1 11:30am-1:00pm
Julie is the founder and director of the Consortium for Israel and the Asylum Seekers. She worked extensively in the field of education in Boston and Washington, DC before moving to Tel Aviv with her family in 2011. In her role as the spouse of the US Ambassador, she engaged with educational, medical, and philanthropic institutions around Israel, highlighting the partnerships between the United States and Israel, and supporting programs to engage minority communities, promote women’s health, advance religious pluralism, and support educational, cultural, and humanitarian programs. Over the past eight years, Julie has worked with NGOs and other partners on projects to improve conditions in childcare facilities, provide humanitarian support, and advocate for the needs of the asylum-seeking community. She created the Consortium for Israel and the Asylum Seekers in order to bring attention to the issue of supporting the African asylum-seeking community in Israel and to facilitate the involvement of volunteers, donors, and communities in Israel and abroad. Julie lives outside Tel Aviv with her husband and three daughters.

Once a Girl, Always a Boy: A Family Memoir of a Transgender Journey
By Jo IvesterMy son Jeremy is transgender. Thirty years ago, we welcomed him into the world as what we thought was our daughter. As a child, however, he preferred the toys and games our society views as masculine. He kept his hair short and wore boys’ clothing. We called him a tomboy. That’s what he called himself.
In his twenties, Jeremy had surgery to remove his breasts and began taking hormones to lower his voice and give him a beard. My book, Once a Girl, Always a Boy, is the story of Jeremy’s difficult yet joyful journey. It is told from multiple perspectives. Those of the siblings who struggled to understand the brother they saw as a sister, and of the parents who joined him in the battle against discrimination, beginning the day his father announced to seven hundred attendees at an ADL dinner that he has a transgender son, that he is proud of him, and that he loves him. This is a story of acceptance in a world not quite ready to accept.
