We are sad to share that Jack Moorstein, father of Cary and father-in-law of Linda passed away on Friday, January 4, 2019.

A service for Jack is being held tomorrow, January 8, 2019 at
11:00 AM at Robert Schoem's Menorah Chapel ( W-150 Route 4 East, Paramus, NJ 07652) with interment at Cedar Park Mausoleum (735 Forest Ave, Paramus, NJ 07652).

Shiva will be at Cary and Linda's home (9 York Road 
Marlboro, NJ 07746) Wednesday and Thursday with a minyan each night at 7:00 PM.

Donations of food, monetary donations to help off-set costs, as well as helping hands to help serve a holiday lunch at the Soup Kitchen are needed to help with this annual event, during which we help to feed as many as 150 people in the Freehold area who are homeless and food insecure. If you cannot volunteer, please consider making donations of food or monetary donations - they are very much needed and greatly appreciated.

All volunteer spots are filled in the order in which they are received. You may request a particular time slot, but those requests cannot be guaranteed.

We are sad to share that Irving Potasky, father of Sandra Potasky, father-in-law of Michael Jast, and grandfather of Daniel and Shayna, passed away on Tuesday, December 4, 2018.

A graveside service for Irving is being held today, December 6, 2018 at 11:00 AM at Mt. Lebanon Cemetery, Gill Lane, Iselin, NJ 08880.

Shiva will be at Sandra and Michael's home (11 Landmark Lane 
Marlboro) today following the service until 8:00 PM, Friday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, Saturday from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, and Sunday from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM.

Second Night of Chanukah

We are sad to share that David Knie, father of Tina Miller, father-In-law of Howard, grandfather of Jana, Sloan and Jordan, great grandfather of Logan, Blake, Reese, Bryce and Brenner passed away on Tuesday, November 27, 2018.

The family will be sitting shiva Thursday at the home of Jana Grotas 15 Walnut Drive, Roslyn, NY 7:00-9:00 p.m.; and, again on Sunday, December 2nd from 7:00-9:00 p.m.. in the Clubhouse at Renaissance on the Ocean, 26 Riviera Drive, Long Branch, NJ. There will be a shiva minyan on Sunday at 7:30 p.m..

Dear Friends:
 
As we celebrated Thanksgiving, we took the time to reflect on our blessings, to count them and give thanks for them. We are blessed with so much!! For some, the basics of food, clothing and housing are not guaranteed. Knowing this, Temple Shaari Emeth has always provided assistance to those in need through our work with Open Door and the Emergency Housing and Advocacy Program.
 
Fourteen years ago, our congregation opened its doors to shelter the homeless during the coldest months of December through March through the Emergency Housing and Advocacy Program. Once again we will join with St. Peters, St. Roberts, Hope Lutheran, Faith Evangelical, St. Veronica and St. Josephs to ensure that there is a safe place to sleep every night of the week during the winter. The miraculous part of this program is that it is all volunteer driven and you too can be part of this life saving work.
 
Let me explain how the process works:
Every Saturday night from December through March, Shaari Emeth houses the homeless and volunteers provide a hot dinner, a cold breakfast and at least one volunteer each week to host the guests and provide hospitality for them.
 
YOU CAN VOLUNTEER TO STAY OVERNIGHT
 
For Overnight Volunteers:     
1) Participants are screened, tested for drugs and alcohol, and given a pass that allows them to receive a ride at 6:00 pm. that leaves from St. Peter’s in Freehold and arrives at the Temple. Any person who is ill, drunk or behaving oddly will not be allowed to receive shelter. Transportation is provided by a taxi service. No more than twelve guests are allowed on any given night.

2) Someone from the Shelter Committee will be at the Temple to welcome you and our guests. There will also be a Security Guard who will sleep in the same room with the men and remain with you overnight. Shaari Emeth Volunteers sleep in the main office and air mattresses are provided. We are looking to have two volunteers from the Temple overnight. Both men and women are welcome to volunteer. Volunteers for overnight must be 13 and over with an adult.
 
3) When the guests arrive there will be other Temple volunteers who provide and serve dinner and you will have an opportunity to eat with the men and get to know them.  You may feel uncomfortable about doing this but it is really the most meaningful part of the night and it means so much to our guests to be treated with kindness.
 
4) Cots and linens are provided and the men set up their own beds. Keep in mind that the same men come once a week to the Temple and they know what to do. After dinner, the men relax, watch TV, use cell phones and typically are asleep before 10:00 p.m.
 
5) The men wake up at 6:30 and the volunteers set up the breakfast cart. All supplies for breakfast are provided by other volunteers. There is a Keurig available for guests to make coffee. The men will fold away their cots and clean up their bedding. You will make sure that breakfast is cleaned up and that the Temple kitchen is in order.
 
6) At 7:30 a.m.  taxi service comes to pick the men up and return them to downtown Freehold. And you can go sleep knowing that you have made a real difference in the life of someone in need.
 
YOU CAN VOLUNTEER TO BRING AND SERVE DINNER OR PROVIDE BREAKFAST
 
Dinner and Breakfast Volunteers:
 
1) If you are donating breakfast a suggested list of items will be sent to you the week you are volunteering. It includes typical Continental Breakfast items. We ask that you drop off the breakfast food sometime before Saturday evening.
 
2) If you are donating dinner, we ask that you prepare or purchase a meal for 15 people. You’ll need to arrive at the Temple by 6:15 on the evening you volunteer. You will set up and serve dinner and you will be finished at approximately 7:30 p.m. after cleaning up. Many people bring their children to help serve. It is a great way to teach them to help those in need.

For teens who serve dinner or stay overnight with a parent, we offer community service letters.

Rabbi Philip E. Schechter
Honored Veteran Rabbi Schechter, who was born in the Bronx, studied at Johns Hopkins and the University of Cincinnati. He received his rabbinical ordination, bachelors and masters degrees in Hebrew Learning, and his doctorate of divinity from Hebrew Union College in Cincinnati and Jerusalem. He has served congregations in Baltimore, Atlantic City, New York City and Manalapan, New Jersey, before moving to Stamford in 2000. Rabbi Schechter served as Temple Shaari Emeth's Rabbi for 30 years.

Upon his ordination in 1960, Rabbi Schechter served as a Chaplain in the Air Force for isolated Jewish service personnel on seven Air Force bases throughout the Western United States. At the same time, he served the civilian Jewish communities of Salina, Kansas; Great Falls, Montana and Roswell, New Mexico. Since moving to Stamford, Rabbi Schechter has served as the Moderator of the Issues in Living Program at the Stamford Senior Center and has been the rabbi for Jewish Living. In 2007-2009, he was co-rabbi of a congregation in Southington with his wife, Rabbi Liz Rolle, who is currently Education Director at Congregation Beth El in Norwalk. He also has served as Rabbi in Residence at the First Presbyterian Church in Stamford since 2009 and is a member of the Stamford Clergy Association.

Elected President of the National Association of Retired Reform Rabbis in 2012, Rabbi Schechter is currently one of the Reform representatives on the JWB Jewish Chaplains Council which endorses Jewish clergy to serve as chaplains for the Department of Defense and is Chaplain of the JWV Fred Robbins Post 142. His daughter, Sarah, is the first woman Jewish Chaplain in the USAF and is currently serving as the Jewish Chaplain for the Air Force Academy in Colorado
