We are sad to share that our member, Bernard Goodman, 92, passed away yesterday, May 9, 2019. He is survived by his children: Andrew Goodman and his wife, Susan, and Barbara Goodman and her husband, John Tyliszczak, as well as his dear friend, Marilyn Steiner. In addition, he is remembered by his grandchildren: Michael Goodman and his wife, Elaine Hensle; Emily and her husband, Michael Hatton; and Douglas Horner and Benjamin Horner; his great-grandchildren, Fiona Goodman and Ethan Hatton, and his sister, Lillian Klein. Bernard, or Bernie, as his friends and family knew him, is predeceased by his wife of 54 years, Thelma, and his sisters, Fannie Ashley and Bess Goldberg.
Bernie was a lover of learning and was a life-long educator. Brooklyn-born and raised, he worked as a teacher for the New York City School System, from which he retired, and as the Director of Education for Reform synagogues in the New York metropolitan area. Bernie served in the military during WWII in Europe, and was an avid swimmer. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, son and dear friend who will be missed by all who knew him.
A service will be held for Bernie on Sunday May, 12, 2019 at 11am at Bloomfield Cooper Jewish Chapels, Manalapan, NJ followed by a burial at Beth Israel Cemetery, Woodbridge, NJ. The family plans to sit Shiva following the burial until 9pm on Sunday in Bernie’s home (6 Wellfleet Street,Monroe Township, NJ 08831), with a minyan at 6:30 p.m . Andrew and Barbara will sit Shiva in their respective homes on Monday and Tuesday.
